The principle of secure Internet payments
Thanks to the technologies used and the absence of a printout mentioning the credit card number in clear text, we can assure you that it is more secure to pay with your credit card on the sites affiliated to PAYBOX than in most local shops. All the payment phases to be carried out between the buyer and PAYBOX are fully encrypted and protected. The protocol used is SSL coupled with electronic banking.

This means that the information related to the order and the number of the bank card do not circulate in clear on Internet.

  • The credit card number is not printed on any paper, invoice, bill or other listing.
  • The merchant has no knowledge of the card numbers.
  • PAYBOX does not keep the card numbers after having transmitted the payment transaction to the merchant's bank.

Thus, no person has access neither in a computer way, nor in a printed way to the bank card details of the purchasers. The risk of having one's bank card number "hacked" during a purchase on an Internet site equipped with PAYBOX SYSTEM is null.

The different steps to secure payment on the Internet
With each payment request, the buyer switches from the merchant server to the PAYBOX SYSTEM payment server, in connection with the banking world.

  1. The buyer arrives on a SSL encrypted payment page.
  2. Entry of the card number, expiry date, visual cryptogram and request for authorisation. The link between the buyer and the PAYBOX SYSTEM server is established in HTTPS, a secure protocol with SSL, which encrypts all the information exchanged. This protection protects the data sent by Internet and guarantees to the purchaser that his bank card number cannot be intercepted in clear by a third party during its transfer towards the PAYBOX SYSTEM secured server. The home page of PAYBOX SYSTEM informs the buyer about his purchase: presentation of the name of the merchant (which guarantees that the trade has been authenticated).
  3. When the card number has passed a first level of control (Luhn's key, stop payments, etc.), the PAYBOX SYSTEM server issues an authorisation request to the centre of the bank with which the merchant is affiliated. This is done using standard banking protocols over a dedicated telecommunication network.
  4. The bank's authorization center returns an authorization number or a rejection. If the payment is accepted, PAYBOX SYSTEM then performs the following transactions: - display of the payment ticket on the buyer's screen (option) - sending of the payment ticket by e-mail to the buyer and the merchant - The card number is NEVER sent back to the merchant.
  5. The buyer is then automatically redirected to the merchant's server, where he can resume his visit.

A special process, developed by PAYBOX Services, enables PAYBOX SYSTEM to monitor the cardholder's behaviour in real time, in particular to avoid the use of the payment server as a tester of automatically generated card numbers, or for other types of attacks:

  • BIN search by increment, bypass or mask
  • multiplication of trials with different expiry dates
  • random carrier IP addresses
  • nomadic card, etc...

Check that you are in secure mode when paying online. In this case, a closed padlock appears at the bottom of the browser window. The beginning of the address of the site http://www at the top of the screen changes to https://www. The "S" following "http" indicates that the communication is protected.

To use a PAYBOX card payment service, the merchant must hold a VAD electronic payment account in an identified banking institution.

Securing the Paybox platform
Recently approved by VISA EUROPE within the framework of the AIS (Account Information Security) programme, and following the various audits carried out, VISA was able to ensure that PAYBOX SERVICES applied a high level of security and integrity, complemented by a sustained technology watch action, in order to maintain the infrastructure of its platform. It should be noted that PAYBOX SERVICES is the first French operator certified on this very demanding program.

PAYBOX SERVICES has begun the steps to obtain the PAYMENT CARD INDUSTRY (PCI) certification. This program defines the security standards acceptable by VISA, MASTERCARD and the BANK CARD GROUP.
